At first glance, the map looks like a typical map of the US, but upon closer inspection, it is much more complex. Mitchell’s map includes the current US states as well as state territories such as the Wisconsin and Iowa territories, which later split into multiple states. It also shows “Indian Territory”, some areas are named for the tribe that lived there, and some of which Mitchell was unsure of what tribe lived there.
