Physician, Family Medicine
I wanted to become a Bucknellian because I was sold on the promise that I could explore anything that interested me. I loved biology. I loved history. I loved finding new ways to learn more about both subjects.
I found everything I wanted and more throughout my education at Bucknell. I felt supported and encouraged by both departments as I double majored in biology and history. I loved being able to do things like investigate the environmental history of New Orleans in the morning with my inspiring advisor, Dr. Campbell, then do research with bats in the afternoon with the renowned Dr. Field. I came to appreciate different ways of approaching problems from each major. And now, as a family medicine physician, I find myself using the experiences and lessons learned from both fields of study in my everyday approach to patient care. My understanding of social determinants of health from my history studies augments my biology-based medical knowledge as I work with my patients toward achieving their health goals.
I feel truly fortunate to have been supported by each and every faculty and staff member I worked with at Bucknell. I would encourage any prospective or current Bucknellian to consider adding history as a double major or even a minor to give them new perspectives, sharpen their critical thinking skills, and learn about how the past shapes the present and future.
